What is Rubella ?
The Rubella test is a blood test used to determine if someone has been infected with the rubella virus or has immunity against it. Rubella, also known as German measles, is a contagious viral infection that is typically mild in children but can cause serious complications in pregnant women, such as miscarriage, stillbirth, or birth defects like deafness and heart problems in the baby. The test detects specific antibodies (IgM and IgG) that the body produces in response to the infection. IgM antibodies indicate a recent or active rubella infection. IgG antibodies suggest past infection or immunity, either from vaccination or a previous infection. The Rubella test is often used in several scenarios, including during pregnancy, to ensure that a woman is immune to rubella and to prevent potential complications during pregnancy. It is also used to verify immunity in individuals who have been vaccinated or those who are at risk of exposure. For instance, it may be part of routine screening for women of childbearing age, before vaccination programs, or as part of checks when a rubella outbreak occurs. Early detection of rubella in a pregnant woman is essential for taking preventive steps to protect the fetus from infection.
