What is BUN ?
The BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen) test measures the amount of nitrogen in the blood in the form of urea, a waste product produced when the body breaks down proteins. Urea is excreted by the kidneys, so elevated BUN levels can indicate kidney dysfunction or dehydration. Clinicians may order a BUN test to: Assess kidney function, as high BUN levels may indicate kidney disease, kidney failure, or other conditions that impair kidney function. Evaluate hydration status, as elevated BUN can suggest dehydration, which concentrates the waste products in the blood. Monitor patients with conditions affecting the kidneys, such as diabetes or hypertension, to track the progression of kidney disease or the effectiveness of treatment.
