What is Cholesterol ?
The Total Cholesterol test measures the overall amount of cholesterol in the blood. Cholesterol is a fatty substance that is necessary for building cells, but when present in excess, it can lead to clogged arteries and increase the risk of heart disease. The test includes both "good" HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein) and "bad" LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) cholesterol, as well as VLDL (Very Low-Density Lipoprotein). Clinicians may order a Total Cholesterol test to: Assess cardiovascular risk, as elevated cholesterol levels, especially high LDL, can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and peripheral artery disease. Monitor lipid profiles in patients with a history of heart disease or high blood pressure. Evaluate the effectiveness of lifestyle changes or medications, such as statins, in managing cholesterol levels.
