What is Chikungunya ?

The Chikungunya test is a diagnostic tool used to detect infection with the chikungunya virus, a mosquito-borne virus that causes chikungunya fever. This viral illness is characterized by sudden onset of fever, severe joint pain, rash, and fatigue. The test identifies the presence of the virus or antibodies produced by the body to fight it, helping confirm the infection. The Chikungunya test is typically ordered when a patient presents with symptoms such as fever, joint pain, rash, and muscle aches, particularly in areas where chikungunya outbreaks are common. It is also used to differentiate chikungunya from other mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and malaria, which share similar symptoms. Early detection through these tests allows for timely management of symptoms and reduces the risk of complications such as prolonged arthritis-like joint pain.

Chikungunya Report Format: Breakdown

Here’s what an ideal Chikungunya report format should include:

Header Information:

  • Patient Details: Full name, Age, Gender, and ID.
  • TAT information: Timestamp for both sample collection and report generation.
  • Doctor's Information: Name of the referral doctor, if applicable.

Test Results Section:

  • Patient's results

As obvious as it is, a test report should definitely have the patient's test result.

Interpretations

Nowadays, most labs prefer to add interpretations to the reports, making the report more patient-friendly. Labsmart software has interpretations of all routine test pre-filled in the software.

Footer Section:

  • Certifications:

Display any relevant accreditations (e.g., NABL, ISO), adding to your lab's credibility.

  • Pathologist and technician signature:

It's mandatory to add a Pathologist and technician signature to the report.

Chikungunya Interpretation

In Labsmart software, this is the inbuilt interpretation for Chikungunya

Positive    Indicates the presence of IgM antibodies against the Chikungunya virus.
Negative Indicates absence of IgM antibodies against Chikungunya virus.

Note:

1. Positive results in serum indicate ongoing or recent infection by Chikungunya virus causing rash, fever, and severe joint pain (arthralgia). The test cannot be used to differentiate between primary and secondary infection.
2. Negative results are seen in the absence of Chikungunya virus infection. However, it does not rule out the disease.
3. False positive results may be seen due to cross-reactivity with other mosquito-borne diseases like Dengue and Zika Virus infections, in patients with high levels of heterophile antibodies and Rheumatoid factor.
4. False-negative results may be due to processing of samples collected early in the course of disease and immunosuppression.

Use: To diagnose an acute stage of infection caused by Chikungunya virus.

Importance of adding interpretation to reports:

It's very helpful to add interpretation in reports as it makes the reports more patient friendly and also helpful to doctors in some cases. Moreover, presently most labs prefer providing reports with interpretation. Thus, adding interpretation to report will help your lab stay at par with other competitor labs.
