What is Urine Cortisol ?
The Urine Cortisol test measures the amount of cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands, in a 24-hour urine sample. Cortisol plays a vital role in regulating various body functions, including metabolism, immune response, and stress management. Measuring its levels in urine helps assess how the adrenal glands are functioning and can identify conditions related to abnormal cortisol production. Cortisol levels naturally fluctuate throughout the day, but consistently elevated or suppressed levels may indicate underlying health issues, such as Cushing’s syndrome (excess cortisol) or Addison’s disease (cortisol deficiency). Doctors often order the test when symptoms of hormonal imbalances are present. Symptoms of high cortisol levels include weight gain, fatigue, high blood pressure, and thinning skin, while low cortisol levels may present as fatigue, weight loss, and low blood pressure. The test is also used to monitor adrenal gland disorders or evaluate the effectiveness of treatments.
