What is Thyroglobulin (TG) ?
The Thyroglobulin (TG) test measures the level of thyroglobulin, a protein produced and stored in the thyroid gland, in the blood. This test is commonly used as a tumor marker in patients with thyroid cancer, especially after thyroidectomy (thyroid removal), to monitor for recurrence or remaining thyroid tissue. Clinicians may order a Thyroglobulin test to: Monitor thyroid cancer treatment: After thyroidectomy or radioactive iodine treatment for thyroid cancer, thyroglobulin levels should be very low or undetectable. Rising levels may indicate cancer recurrence or remaining thyroid tissue. Detect recurrence in thyroid cancer patients: Regular monitoring of thyroglobulin in patients with a history of thyroid cancer helps detect recurrence early, allowing for prompt intervention. Evaluate effectiveness of thyroidectomy: In cases where the thyroid gland has been surgically removed, this test helps ensure that no thyroid tissue remains, which would produce thyroglobulin. Assess remaining thyroid tissue in hyperthyroidism treatment: For patients treated for hyperthyroidism, this test can help determine if any thyroid tissue remains, especially if thyroglobulin levels remain high post-treatment. Guide follow-up care: The thyroglobulin test is useful in guiding follow-up care in thyroid cancer survivors, helping clinicians tailor ongoing monitoring based on TG levels.
Thyroglobulin (TG) Report Format: Breakdown
Here’s what an ideal Thyroglobulin (TG) report format should include:
Header Information:
- Patient Details: Full name, Age, Gender, and ID.
- TAT information: Timestamp for both sample collection and report generation.
- Doctor's Information: Name of the referral doctor, if applicable.
Test Results Section:
-
Patient's results
As obvious as it is, a test report should definitely have the patient's test result.
-
Result's Unit
The unit of the test result must be mentioned correctly in the report. Thyroglobulin (TG) test is generally reported in “ng/mL”
-
Thyroglobulin (TG) Normal Value / Reference Range
The report must have the normal Thyroglobulin (TG) range. It can differ slightly based on the reagents used by the lab and other internal factors, but common Thyroglobulin (TG) ranges are:
< 55 ng/mL
Interpretations
Nowadays, most labs prefer to add interpretations to the reports, making the report more patient-friendly. Labsmart software has interpretations of all routine test pre-filled in the software.
Footer Section:
-
Certifications:
Display any relevant accreditations (e.g., NABL, ISO), adding to your lab's credibility.
-
Pathologist and technician signature:
It's mandatory to add a Pathologist and technician signature to the report.
Thyroglobulin (TG) Interpretation
In Labsmart software, this is the inbuilt interpretation for Thyroglobulin (TG)
Importance of adding interpretation to reports:
It's very helpful to add interpretation in reports as it makes the reports more patient friendly and also helpful to doctors in some cases. Moreover, presently most labs prefer providing reports with interpretation. Thus, adding interpretation to report will help your lab stay at par with other competitor labs.
