What is Albumin ?
The Serum Albumin test measures the level of albumin in the blood. Albumin is a protein produced by the liver and plays a crucial role in maintaining blood volume and pressure, transporting substances, and supporting cell function. Low levels of albumin can indicate liver disease, kidney disease, or malnutrition. Clinicians may order a Serum Albumin test to: Assess liver function, as low albumin levels may suggest liver dysfunction or liver disease. Evaluate kidney health, since kidney conditions like nephrotic syndrome can lead to protein loss in the urine and low serum albumin. Monitor nutritional status, as low albumin levels can be a sign of malnutrition or protein deficiency.
Albumin Report Format: Breakdown
Here’s what an ideal Albumin report format should include:
Header Information:
- Patient Details: Full name, Age, Gender, and ID.
- TAT information: Timestamp for both sample collection and report generation.
- Doctor's Information: Name of the referral doctor, if applicable.
Test Results Section:
-
Patient's results
As obvious as it is, a test report should definitely have the patient's test result.
-
Result's Unit
The unit of the test result must be mentioned correctly in the report. Albumin test is generally reported in “g/dl”
-
Albumin Normal Value / Reference Range
The report must have the normal Albumin range. It can differ slightly based on the reagents used by the lab and other internal factors, but common Albumin ranges are:
For any gender, 0 to 4 days of age: 2.8 - 4.4 For any gender, 4 days to 14 year of age: 3.8 - 5.4 For any gender, 14 to 19 year of age: 3.2 - 4.5 For any gender, 19 to 60 year of age: 3.5 - 5.2 For any gender, 60 to 90 year of age: 3.5 - 4.6
Interpretations
Nowadays, most labs prefer to add interpretations to the reports, making the report more patient-friendly. Labsmart software has interpretations of all routine test pre-filled in the software.
Footer Section:
-
Certifications:
Display any relevant accreditations (e.g., NABL, ISO), adding to your lab's credibility.
-
Pathologist and technician signature:
It's mandatory to add a Pathologist and technician signature to the report.
Albumin Interpretation
In Labsmart software, this is the inbuilt interpretation for Albumin
Importance of adding interpretation to reports:
It's very helpful to add interpretation in reports as it makes the reports more patient friendly and also helpful to doctors in some cases. Moreover, presently most labs prefer providing reports with interpretation. Thus, adding interpretation to report will help your lab stay at par with other competitor labs.
