What is Urine Pregnancy Test ?

The Urine Pregnancy Test is a simple and non-invasive diagnostic test used to detect pregnancy by identifying the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in a woman’s urine. hCG is a hormone produced by the placenta shortly after a fertilized egg implants in the uterine lining. The levels of hCG increase rapidly in early pregnancy, making it a reliable marker for confirming pregnancy. The test is typically performed when a woman suspects she might be pregnant, especially after a missed period or experiencing early pregnancy symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, or breast tenderness. It can also be used in clinical settings to confirm pregnancy before certain medical procedures or treatments.

Interpretation
1. If the pregnancy test is taken too early one may get a false negative result very dilute urine specimen may not contain a representative level of HCG, resulting in a negative test too.
2. If pregnancy is still suspected, first morning specimen should be collected 48 hours later and tested.
3. A test result that is weakly positive should be confirmed by retesting with a first-morning urine specimen collected 48 hours later.
4. A number of conditions other than pregnancy, including trophoblastic disease and non-trophoblastic neoplasm cause elevated levels of HCG resulting in a false positive test.
5. The result should be correlated with clinical and ultrasound findings.
