What is Anti Phospholipid Antibodies ?
The Anti-Phospholipid Antibodies (aPL) test measures the presence of autoantibodies that mistakenly attack phospholipids, essential components of cell membranes, or proteins bound to phospholipids. These antibodies are commonly associated with antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), an autoimmune condition that increases the risk of abnormal blood clotting, miscarriage, and other vascular complications. There are three main types of anti-phospholipid antibodies tested: lupus anticoagulant, anticardiolipin antibodies, and beta-2 glycoprotein 1 antibodies. Elevated levels of any of these antibodies can indicate APS or contribute to a higher risk of clotting disorders. This test is ordered when a patient experiences recurrent blood clots, multiple miscarriages, or other symptoms suggestive of APS, such as low platelet counts or a history of stroke at a young age. It is often conducted as part of a panel of tests to diagnose APS and differentiate it from other autoimmune conditions.
