What is Triglycerides ?

The Triglycerides test measures the level of triglycerides in the blood. Triglycerides are a type of fat (lipid) found in the blood and are used by the body for energy. However, elevated levels of triglycerides can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other metabolic disorders. Clinicians may order a Triglycerides test to: Assess cardiovascular risk, as high triglyceride levels can contribute to the hardening and narrowing of arteries, leading to heart disease. Monitor patients with diabetes or metabolic syndrome, as elevated triglycerides are commonly associated with these conditions. Evaluate the effectiveness of lifestyle changes or treatments, such as changes in diet or the use of medications to lower triglycerides and prevent related complications.

Triglycerides Report Format: Breakdown

Here’s what an ideal Triglycerides report format should include:

Header Information:

  • Patient Details: Full name, Age, Gender, and ID.
  • TAT information: Timestamp for both sample collection and report generation.
  • Doctor's Information: Name of the referral doctor, if applicable.

Test Results Section:

  • Patient's results

As obvious as it is, a test report should definitely have the patient's test result.

  • Result's Unit

The unit of the test result must be mentioned correctly in the report. Triglycerides test is generally reported in “mg/dl”

  • Triglycerides Normal Value / Reference Range

The report must have the normal Triglycerides range. It can differ slightly based on the reagents used by the lab and other internal factors, but common Triglycerides ranges are:

    For any gender, 0 to 100 year of age: 25 - 200

Interpretations

Nowadays, most labs prefer to add interpretations to the reports, making the report more patient-friendly. Labsmart software has interpretations of all routine test pre-filled in the software.

Footer Section:

  • Certifications:

Display any relevant accreditations (e.g., NABL, ISO), adding to your lab's credibility.

  • Pathologist and technician signature:

It's mandatory to add a Pathologist and technician signature to the report.

Triglycerides Interpretation

In Labsmart software, this is the inbuilt interpretation for Triglycerides

Physiological basis
Dietary fat is hydrolyzed in the small intestine, absorbed and resynthesized by mucosal cells, and secreted into lacteals as chylomicrons.
Triglycerides in the chylomicrons are cleared from the blood by tissue lipoprotein lipase. Endogenous triglyceride production occurs in the liver. These triglycerides are transported in association with β-lipoproteins in very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL).

Interpretation
Increased in
: Hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus, nephrotic syndrome, chronic alcoholism (fatty liver), biliary tract obstruction, stress, familial lipoprotein lipase deficiency, familial dysbetalipoproteinemia, familial combined hyperlipidemia, obesity, metabolic syndrome, viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, pancreatitis, chronic renal failure, gout, pregnancy, glycogen storage diseases types I, III, and VI, anorexia nervosa, dietary excess.
Drugs: β-blockers, cholestyramine, corticosteroids, diazepam, diuretics, estrogens, oral contraceptives.

Decreased in : Tangier disease (α-lipoprotein deficiency), hypo- and abetalipoproteinemia, malnutrition, malabsorption, parenchymal liver disease, hyperthyroidism, intestinal lymphangiectasia.
Drugs: ascorbic acid, clofibrate, nicotinic acid, gemfibrozil.

Comments
If the serum is clear, the serum triglyceride level is generally <350 mg/dL.
Elevated triglycerides are now considered an independent risk factor for coronary artery disease and a major risk factor for acute pancreatitis, particularly when serum triglyceride levels are > 1000 mg/dL and can be seen when a primary lipid disorder that is exacerbated by alcohol or fat intake or by corticosteroid or estrogen therapy.

Importance of adding interpretation to reports:

It's very helpful to add interpretation in reports as it makes the reports more patient friendly and also helpful to doctors in some cases. Moreover, presently most labs prefer providing reports with interpretation. Thus, adding interpretation to report will help your lab stay at par with other competitor labs.
