What is DHEA ?
The DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone) test measures the level of DHEA, a hormone produced mainly by the adrenal glands. DHEA serves as a precursor to male and female sex hormones (androgens and estrogens) and plays a role in sexual development, immune function, and stress response. Abnormal levels of DHEA can indicate various health issues, including adrenal gland disorders and hormonal imbalances. Clinicians may order a DHEA test to: Assess adrenal gland function: High or low DHEA levels can indicate adrenal gland dysfunction, as seen in conditions like adrenal tumors, hyperplasia, or adrenal insufficiency. Investigate symptoms of hormonal imbalance: DHEA testing can help evaluate symptoms such as irregular menstrual cycles, acne, excessive hair growth (hirsutism), or infertility, especially in women with suspected polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Diagnose and monitor adrenal disorders: For conditions like Addison’s disease or Cushing’s syndrome, DHEA levels can aid in diagnosis and ongoing management. Evaluate early or delayed puberty: In children and adolescents, abnormal DHEA levels may indicate premature puberty (precocious puberty) or delayed puberty, which can help guide further assessment. Support monitoring during hormone therapy: DHEA testing can be useful for patients undergoing hormone therapy, helping to adjust treatment and ensure balanced hormone levels.
