What is HbA1c ?
The HbA1c (Hemoglobin A1c) test measures the average blood sugar (glucose) levels over the past 2-3 months by checking the amount of glucose attached to hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. This test is a key tool in diagnosing and managing diabetes, as it reflects long-term blood sugar control. Clinicians may order an HbA1c test to: Diagnose diabetes: An HbA1c level of 6.5% or higher indicates diabetes, while a level between 5.7% and 6.4% suggests prediabetes. Monitor diabetes management: For patients with diabetes, the test is used to track how well blood sugar levels are being controlled over time, with a target typically below 7% for most diabetic patients. Assess risk of diabetes complications: High HbA1c levels over time can increase the risk of complications such as heart disease, nerve damage, and kidney problems. The test helps in identifying patients who may be at risk.
