What is Serum Uric Acid ?
The Serum Uric Acid test measures the amount of uric acid in a patient's blood. Uric acid is a waste product formed when the body breaks down purines, substances found in certain foods and drinks. Normally, uric acid is filtered out by the kidneys and excreted in urine. Elevated levels can indicate conditions such as gout, kidney stones, or kidney dysfunction. Clinicians may order a Serum Uric Acid test to: Diagnose gout, a form of arthritis caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints. Monitor kidney function, as high uric acid levels can lead to kidney stones or indicate poor kidney performance. Evaluate metabolic conditions, as elevated uric acid is linked with metabolic syndrome, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases.
