What is Folic Acid ?

The Folic Acid test measures the level of folate, a type of vitamin B9, in the blood. Folate is essential for several bodily functions, including DNA synthesis, red blood cell production, and proper fetal development during pregnancy. It also plays a critical role in converting homocysteine, an amino acid, into methionine, which is crucial for protein synthesis. Low levels of folic acid can lead to folate deficiency, causing symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, irritability, or anemia. A deficiency during pregnancy may increase the risk of neural tube defects in the developing fetus. Doctors commonly order this test to evaluate folate levels in individuals with symptoms of anemia, poor nutrition, or malabsorption conditions like celiac disease or Crohn’s disease. It is also used to monitor folate levels in pregnant women or individuals undergoing treatment for deficiencies.

Folic Acid Report Format: Breakdown

Here’s what an ideal Folic Acid report format should include:

Header Information:

  • Patient Details: Full name, Age, Gender, and ID.
  • TAT information: Timestamp for both sample collection and report generation.
  • Doctor's Information: Name of the referral doctor, if applicable.

Test Results Section:

  • Patient's results

As obvious as it is, a test report should definitely have the patient's test result.

  • Result's Unit

The unit of the test result must be mentioned correctly in the report. Folic Acid test is generally reported in “ng/mL ”

Interpretations

Nowadays, most labs prefer to add interpretations to the reports, making the report more patient-friendly. Labsmart software has interpretations of all routine test pre-filled in the software.

Footer Section:

  • Certifications:

Display any relevant accreditations (e.g., NABL, ISO), adding to your lab's credibility.

  • Pathologist and technician signature:

It's mandatory to add a Pathologist and technician signature to the report.

Folic Acid Interpretation

In Labsmart software, this is the inbuilt interpretation for Folic Acid

Note
1. Drugs like Methotrexate and Leucovorin can affect folate test results.
2. To tell apart vitamin B12 deficiency from folate deficiency, check levels of Methyl malonic acid in urine and Homocysteine in blood.
3. Folic acid has a low risk of toxicity because it's a water-soluble vitamin that’s usually excreted in urine.

Comments
Folate is crucial for making DNA components and for red blood cell maturation. It comes mainly from plants and some organ meats, but cooking can destroy over half of it. Folate deficiency is common in people with alcoholic liver disease, pregnant women, and the elderly. It can result from poor absorption, inadequate diet, high demand (like in pregnancy or cancer), or certain drugs such as Methotrexate and anticonvulsants

Interpretation
Decreased Levels: Megaloblastic anemia, Infantile hyperthyroidism, Alcoholism, Malnutrition, Scurvy, Liver disease, B12 deficiency, dietary amino acid excess, adult Celiac disease, Tropical Sprue, Crohn’s disease, Hemolytic anemias, Carcinomas, Myelofibrosis, vitamin B6 deficiency, pregnancy, Whipple’s disease, extensive intestinal resection and severe exfoliative dermatitis.

Importance of adding interpretation to reports:

It's very helpful to add interpretation in reports as it makes the reports more patient friendly and also helpful to doctors in some cases. Moreover, presently most labs prefer providing reports with interpretation. Thus, adding interpretation to report will help your lab stay at par with other competitor labs.
