What is Folic Acid ?
The Folic Acid test measures the level of folate, a type of vitamin B9, in the blood. Folate is essential for several bodily functions, including DNA synthesis, red blood cell production, and proper fetal development during pregnancy. It also plays a critical role in converting homocysteine, an amino acid, into methionine, which is crucial for protein synthesis. Low levels of folic acid can lead to folate deficiency, causing symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, irritability, or anemia. A deficiency during pregnancy may increase the risk of neural tube defects in the developing fetus. Doctors commonly order this test to evaluate folate levels in individuals with symptoms of anemia, poor nutrition, or malabsorption conditions like celiac disease or Crohn’s disease. It is also used to monitor folate levels in pregnant women or individuals undergoing treatment for deficiencies.
